A concise illustrated study of the first military conflict of the Cold War.

At 4am on Sunday 25 June 1950, powerful North Korean forces invaded South Korea, advancing down the Uijongbu Corridor towards the Southern Capital of Seoul. South Korean troops resisted bravely, but were crushed by overwhelming Northern superiority. Later that day, the United Nations Security Council condemned the aggression, and on 7 July appointed US General of the Army Douglas MacArthur to command UN forces which would be sent to save South Korea.

Nigel Thomas and Peter Abbott explore the history of this conflict, which pitted UN forces against the People's Republic of China in a struggle that resulted in hundreds of thousands of casualties.

The text is accompanied by black and white photographs, maps and diagrams, along with colour plates from artist Mike Chappell depicting uniforms and equipment of soldiers of North and South Korea, People's Republic of China, the United States and other UN forces.

Om forfatteren

DR NIGEL THOMAS is an accomplished linguist and military historian and is currently a Senior Lecturer in charge of the Business Language Unit at the University of Northumbria, Newcastle. His interests are 20th century military and civil uniformed organisations. He was recently awarded a PhD on the Eastern Enlargement of NATO. PETER ABBOTT is a retired university lecturer with a lifelong interest in both military and African history. His publications include a number of titles for Osprey, two of them being Men-at-Arms 183: Modern African Wars (1): Rhodesia 1965-80 and Men-at-Arms 202: Modern African Wars (2): Angola and Mozambique 1961-74.

MIKE CHAPPELL comes from an Aldershot family with British Army connections stretching back several generations. He enlisted as a teenage private in the Royal Hampshire Regiment in 1952 and retired in 1974, as RSM of the 1st Battalion The Wessex Regiment (Rifle Volunteers). He began painting military subjects in 1968 and since then has gained worldwide popularity as a military illustrator. Mike has also written and illustrated many books in the Osprey Military list.

– Boken er jo heller ikke ment å være en historisk innføring men først og fremst en oversikt over de stridende parter, deres slagorden, organisasjon og ikke minst uniformer og distinksjoner. Boken lyktes i å sette dette inn i den historiske sammenhengen, selv om det kanskje blir litt tørt til tider og kunne vært bedre organisert. Litt mer detaljer om uniformer og utstyr kunne med hell også vært inkludert, men tatt i betrakning formatets begrensninger (serien er begrenset til 48 sider for hver bok) holder boken en høy standard. De tallrike illustrasjonene, svart-hvitt fotografier av god kvalitet og de åtte sidene med fargeplansjer av svært høy kvalitet trekker nytteverdien av boken opp betraktelig.
