Rene Descartes (1596-1650), the French philosopher and mathematician, is generally regarded as the founder of modern philosophy.
Desmond C. Clarke is Professor of Philosophy at University College, Cork. He has published widely on Descartes and French
seventeenth-century Cartesian philosophers.
