– If he's buying a hamburger or an apartment, or just playing in the snow with his sisters, David Sedaris' life seems so normal and uninteresting. Except, of course, it's not. I don't know if it's his demented family, who posses the kind of weird snobbery one only sees in those newly turned middle-class, or if it's just Sedaris' outlook on things, but either way; this is one funny book. It's a collection of essays, all which have appeared before in magazines or on radio, and that are now collected in this great collection. Most of the essays are about his family in one way or the other, but there are the odd pieces on Dutch Christmas traditions and stuff like that. Sedaris writing is clean, immaculately edited and a pleasure to read. He posses an understated sarcasm, and dry humour which makes even the saddest stories inappropriately funny. And of course theres easy to love an author who starts an essay with I was on the front porch, drowning a mouse in a bucket.. This is a great book, and a quick read, which I'd recommend to anyone who appreciates wit, good writing and small, gay sarcastic men.
