– Denne boken er et viktig bidrag i debatten om sekularisering. Dersom man er opptatt av religionens rolle i det moderne samfunn er denne boken et friskt pust, selv om meningene som fremstilles naturligvis kan diskuteres. Det er viktig å ha satt seg inn i debatten før man leser denne boken slik at man har noe å sette den i forhold til, først da vil den komme til sin rett. Steve Bruce er som tittelen tilsier tilhenger av sterke sekulariseringsteorier og mener at religion til slutt vil forsvinne fra verden. Han argumenterer for dette ved å presentere flere case-studier, og prøver her å vise hvordan religion har fått minkende betydning gjennom historien. Dette er en ende av debatten, og man bør derfor lese litteratur som tar for seg motvekten for å få et mer nyansertt bilde.
Selv om jeg selv stiller meg kritisk til mye av det Bruce skriver om i boken, er det interessant å lese en bok som ikke går rundt grøten. En god og interessant bok som alle som er interessert i disse temaene burde får med seg.

Om forfatteren
Steve Bruce is the Professor of Sociology and Head of Department of Sociology at the University of Aberdeen. He has also held visiting posts at the universities of Virginia and Edinburgh. He is one of the world's leading sociologists of religion and has recently been elected a Fellow of the British Academy.
Professor Bruce has published 13 books and over 90 articles. The following are his most recent books: Pray TV: Televangelism in America (1990), Religion in Modern Britain (1995), Religion in the Modern World (1996), Conservative Protestant Politics (1998), Sociology: A Very Short Introduction (1999), Choice and Religion (1999), Fundamentalism (Polity, 2001), and Politics and Religion (Polity, 2003).
