Never let me go

In one of the most memorable novels of recent years, Kazuo Ishiguro imagines the lives of a group of students growing up in a darkly skewered version of contemporary England. Narrated by Kathy, now 31, Never Let Me Go hauntingly dramatises her attempts to come to terms with her childhood at the seemingly idyllic Hailsham School, and with the fate that has always awaited her and her closest friends in the wider world. O
Oslomor – 03.05.2009

– Ruth, Tommy and out protagonist Kathy have all grown up at Hailsham. They are taught about art and sports and literature and how it's important that they keep their bodies healthy by not smoking or contracting any STD's. They are also vaguely informed of how their lives will be after Hailsham. How they will go on to become carers, and then donors; donating their vital organs to people dying from some fatal disease. Ruth, Kathy and Tommy are all clones, and their only purpose in life is to grow healthy organs for the 'real people'. And they are fine with it, or if not fine, than at least resigned to it as an inevitable way of life. And this resignation and acceptance of their reason of living is what make this book so incredibly heart wrenching. Ishiguro is speculating not only with humanity's willingness to use science in the most horrid of ways, but he's also challenging out free will and the statement claiming that faced with your mortality you will make the most of your life, cramming as much Life into it as possible. This is an amazing story, and has so many ideas and possibilities. An amazing read.
