– En vanlig innvending mot å tro på Gud, er å stille spørsmål ved lidelsens tilstedeværelse i verden. Hvordan kan Gud tillate så mye lidelse, og hvordan kan man forklare den ut ifra en religion? I "Problems of Suffering in Religions of the World" gjennomgås ulike livssyn med utgangspunkt i deres tilnærming til lidelsesproblemet. Alle religioner har nemlig sin egen ¿tolkning¿ av lidelse, som jo er et universelt problem. Boka er mer en systematisk gjennomgang enn en sammenligning. Dette gjør at man fint kan lese kapitlene uavhengig av hverandre dersom man er mer interessert i enkelte religioner. Det må likevel sies at stoffet er noe tungt på grunn av den filosofiske tilnærmingsmetoden. Hvis man ikke forakter litt filosofiske grublerier rundt viktige, eksistensielle spørsmål, er denne boka sannsynligvis midt i blinken. Det hjelper å ha litt innsikt i religionshistorie, og i studieøyemed er det absolutt et interessant verk å sette seg inn i.
