– Okay, pay close attention; this is a book about a boy who's in love with a girl, who in turn is in love with a woman who lost half of herself when witnessing herself having sex while being trapped in a Ferris wheel, thus loosing all ability to really love anyone ever. Yes, Murakami is one surreal bastard. But he's also one hell of a storyteller, following in the Kafkaesque tradition of putting dopey characters in a world they can't control, and thus portraying both psychological dystopia and modern-day existential angst. Sputnik Sweetheart is no exception; inhabited by loveable, highly introspective (and therefore rewarding) characters, and with a plotline that will mystify and excite all lovers of awesome contemporary writing. Murakami is a master storyteller, and Sputnik Sweetheart is very good proof of this.
