– "Saturday" er historien om en dag i en manns liv, men den dekker også mange andre emner. Terrorfrykt, krigen i Irak og hva som gjør en mann til den han er er noe av det som tas opp. Henry Perowne står opp og føler seg lykkelig, forventningsfull. Så ser han et fly kræsje, og brått har dagen skiftet karakter: Han frykter terrorangrep og føler seg truet av situasjonen i verden. Utover dagen styrkes denne følelsen av at noe grusomt kommer til å skje, og kulminerer om kvelden. Dette er en godt skrevet roman, med medrivende beskrivelser, og den gir oss et overbevisende portrett av en mann. Når jeg likevel ikke vil gi den toppkarakter, er det fordi jeg syns både handling og tema blir for åpenbart. Jeg blir ikke sjokkert av det som skjer, noe jeg ville forvente fra McEwan. Men det er fortsatt en god bok som er verdt å lese.

Henry Perowne, a successful neurosurgeon, stands at his bedroom window before dawn and watches a plane - ablaze with fire like a meteor - arcing across the London sky. Over the course of the following day, unease gathers about Perowne, as he moves amongst hundreds of thousands of anti-war protestors in the post-9/11 streets.
A minor car accident brings him into confrontation with Baxter, a fidgety, aggressive man, who to Perowne's professional eye appears to be profoundly unwell. But it is not until Baxter makes a sudden appearance at the Perowne family home that Henry's earlier fears seem about to be realised...
