– Du lærer ikke å skrive god norsk av denne boken. Den er skrevet av og for engelskskrivende. Gramatikkdelen, for eksempel, er tilnærmet ubrukelig. Her anbefaler jeg heller Vinjes Skriveregler. Når det kommer til vanlige feil, ville jeg heller valgt Pressespråket av Lars Aarønæs. "Elements" er likevel ikke bortkastet, og spesielt seksjonen An Approach to Style er rik på gode råd. Du vil også oppdage at mange av rådene du har lest andre steder, men som stammer fra Elements, er blitt spissformulert ut av sin opprinnelige mening. For eksempel er ikke boken like streng overfor passiv tekst som ryktet vil ha det til. Kanskje den burde roet ned sine oppfordringer til bastante formuleringer? Helt klart en sekser for den engelske markedet. Men for nordmenn er etter min mening bare verdt en firer.

William Strunk, Jr. first used his own book, The Elements of Style, in 1919 for his English 8 course at Cornell University. The book was published in 1935 by Oliver Strunk.
E. B. White was a student in Professor Strunk's class at Cornell, and used "the little book" for himself. Commissioned by Macmillan to revise Strunk's book, White edited the 1959 and 1972 editions of The Elements of Style.
