– Ken Follett has written some of the best thrillers in the genre but has fallen short on his last couple of outings, namely "Whiteout" and "Code to Zero". Whiteout has all the ingredients for a thrilling suspense story, but never really gets off the ground. A rather contrived romantic interest slows the book down and really contributes nothing to the plot. The last third of the book gets going fairly well, but then seems to end abruptly. It almost seemed as if the author got tired then decided to end the book when there was much more excitement that could have been explored. The elements of a good suspense thriller were there; deadly viruses, horrendous snow storm, terrorists, crooks on the run but these plot lines were not well developed. Still, it is a fair read, just not up to Follett's earlier books.

– I have read all of Follett's novels and enjoyed most of them. Whiteout is one of his best. Follett deftly weaves a tale of attempted bioterrorism, set in Scotland in winter at Xmastime. The action takes place in a biotechnology lab and in the family estate of the scientist/owner, Stanley Oxenford. A gang of thieves have commandeered the services of Stanley's son, Kit, who owes a lot of gambling debts to the local mobster. Arrayed against them is Toni Gallo, head of security at the lab and ex-police. Follett paints a revealing portrait of sibling rivalry and family interpersonal dynamics in the extended Oldenford clan. As the plot unfolds, the family and the villains end up snowbound with a deadly virus at the family estate. Various members of the family, including 16-year-old Craig, engage in various initiatives to thwart the thieves. But eventually Toni, who has fallen in love with Stanley, foils their attempt to sell the virus to their terrorist buyer.
Follett's writing style grips you by the throat and carries you along turning the pages and burning the midnight oil until you reach the end and close the book with a sigh of satisfaction.

– I admire Follet like few other authors. He has a long career and unlike most popular writers who manage to publish more than half a dozen best sellers, his work never becomes formulaic. This is not his strongest work, "Pillars of the Earth" takes that honor for me, but talk about a page turner. The book's chapters are headed chronologically It takes almost half the novel to build up, but Follet describes this caper gone wrong with such vivid detail and makes it so damned exciting, that you'd better hit the chapter that begins at the stroke of midnight Christmas Day early in the evening, because I challenge you to put the book down after that point. Remarkably well done.

– With White Out, Follett pulls together the ingredients for a great story. Set in the present day, Follett spins a tale focused on a multi-generational, dysfunctional family together in a remote Scottish estate for the Christmas holiday. The patriarch of the family is a brilliant scientist who created and runs a nearby medical research laboratory. As the story unfolds, the reader is introduced to a group of nefarious individuals intent on launching a biological terrorist attack in London. Character development is strong. Human frailties are exposed. A series of sub-plots run throughout, adding depth to the main storyline. Although the story starts a little bit slow, White Out becomes an impressive, fast-paced tale, full of intrigue, twists, and turns that are classic Follett. Once you start reading, it will be difficult to stop.

– We have a deadly virus for which there is no cure. It is stored in a secure facility at a small biotech company in Scotland. Terrorists want the virus for mass murder, so they offer big money to three criminals to steal it. The criminals get into the lab by paying the sleazy son of the company's owner, who thinks that they are only going to steal a harmless drug. They steal the virus, but an immense snowstorm buries Scotland, and things get difficult for the thieves, for the police, and for the company owner's family. If you are looking for a nail-biting, fast-moving story, you will be disappointed. The tale proceeds leisurely, almost as if it is making its way through deep snow. Strangely, I couldn't get all worked up about a virus this deadly. I think it was because I was faced with too many chapters of soap-opera details about the company owner's family. Still, this is a nice story that will keep you reading...
