Advances in Gear Design and Manufacture
«
This edited volume provides comprehensive coverage of the kinematics and kinetics used in gear design. There has actually been a need for such a book to fill a gap in the literature on gear design and manufacture, since this topic is not well covered in traditional machine design books. The first, second, and fourth chapters cover the gear laws and the design of gear teeth so as to reduce wear and noise during actual working conditions, while the design and kinematics of planar gears are covered in chapter 8. The technological aspects of gear manufacture are also covered in contributions by top experts from Germany, Sweden, and the US. Gear honing and finishing are discussed in chapter 2, while production of gears by means of powder metallurgy (PM) is covered in chapter 9. Heat treatment, too, is not left behind, since detailed coverage is provided in chapter 10. This reviewer was most impressed to see the in-depth coverage of electrohydrodynamic lubrication of conformal gears in chapter 5. The book is a useful reference for senior year undergraduate engineering students, and also very useful for working gear designers and manufacturers.
--S. D. El Wakil, emeritus, University of Massachusetts Dartmouth
Summing Up: Highly recommended. Upper-division undergraduates through faculty and professionals.
