This book is a result of research into ten technologies currently under development that will directly affect community colleges and universities, most within the next 5-20 years and a few within the next 20-30 years. The research conducted on each of the technologies provides a baseline of current development, and predictions of when they may impact institutions of higher education. These technologies develop in two phases, first, in a linear manner, and second, following up with an exponential velocity. The development of Uber and Airbnb are good examples of the speed of exponential development. Institutions of higher education need to be prepared for the disruptions that the ten technologies discussed will create.

«An excellent follow-up to Facing an Exponential Future (2018). It gives community colleges and universities a roadmap for future program development needed to meet the technological growth society faces.»

John Mckay, EdD, President, South Piedmont Community College, NC (Retired)

«A Baseline of Development: Higher Education and Technology, reflects extensive research and clearly explains the vast entrepreneurial potential of new and emerging industries as well as the opportunities for higher education to prepare to educate and train the workforce for jobs that did not exist a mere five years ago. The book also discusses the challenges faced by both community colleges and universities to create the programs of study that will be essential in the education and training of a workforce that is equipped to continue to develop these emerging technologies and to provide technical support as new products are produced. A Baseline of Development: Higher Education and Technology should serve as a wake-up call for institutions of higher education to get ready to meet the challenge of creating a highly trained workforce that will be vitally important as these new industries grow at an exponential rate.»

Frank J. Tamberelli, Lead Faculty, Integrated Business Program, University of Central Florida

«College and university leaders are expected to be looking forward constantly, scanning the horizon for the new innovations that will impact the marketplace, and thus, affect programs of study at their institutions. In a Baseline of Development: Higher Education and Technology, Staat details numerous technologies that have transformed the educational landscape and will continue to do so into the foreseeable future. A great read for academic leaders.»

Heather Woodson, EdD, Associate Vice President of Academic Affairs, Gaston College, NC

«As someone who embraces technology whole-heartedly, I acknowledge the need and challenge of staying informed and keeping pace with the ever-evolving technology of today’s world. With this book, I am able to do just that. By focusing on ten 21st century technologies, this book serves as a well-researched and thoughtfully-compiled foundation for all educators and administrators; it details what to know, what to embrace now, and what to watch and account for in the near future.»

Jenny Billings, Chair of English and Study Skills, Rowan-Cabarrus Community College
